A project environment is a logical environment consisting of a database and a copy of the software packages. For a major project, the testing strategy requires on average 10 environments: functional sandbox, functional tests, development, technical sandbox, training, Gold, certification and production. Each environment has a specific role in the project lifecycle.

Each member of a project team plays one or more roles. Key roles include the sponsor, project director, PCO, solution architect, business analyst, software expert, developer, infrastructure manager and change management manager. Each role has specific tasks and responsibilities that contribute to project success. These roles will be active according to the nature and scope of the project.
